| Good
vs Bad Parenting
Kia ora dear XT readers.
Child education experts agree
that what happens in the first few years of a child's life plays a major
role in their intellectual development. Research has shown that for a child
to reach it's maximum potential, it needs a nurturing environment.
My parents grew up when the
rule was "children should be seen but not heard". If the child was noisy
or naughty then they were chastised with a slapping or even a belting.
Each generation passes their
habits to the next and only education can break the cycle of ignorance,
mismanagement of childs needs and the ongoing misery.
I myself went into parenthood
totally unaware of my children's needs and I regret that very much. In
my ignorance I focussed on my work and other self-centered pursuits, assuming
that my children would somehow find their own way to normal adulthood without
my assistance, just as my own parents had done.
I'm now an advocate for spending
more of taxpayer's funds on nurturing children in their early years. Every
government should make a priority of creating the right conditions for
child rearing.
The present system is not
working and the result is that we have an epidemic of maladjusted, violent
young people that resort to drugs, vandalism and crime. The cycle continues.
Too many parents are forced
to work hard just to provide basic amenities of food and shelter for their
children and consequently have no time, or are just too tired to nurture
their children in the proper way as nature intended.
The advent of maternity leave
in some countries is a promising sign of positive change. Hopefully paternity
leave will follow and eventually be an accepted custom.
If we want a stable and peaceful
society, then we have to begin by giving parents compulsory education in
proper parenting techniques and then make it easy for them to spend more
quality time with the children, especially during the early years.
Aroha nui until next month.

Month's Country |
| New Zealand

New Zealand is a country
of rare seismic beauty: glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, deep, clear
lakes, hissing geysers and boiling mud. There are also abundant forest
reserves, long, deserted beaches and a variety of fauna, such as the kiwi,
endemic to its shores. Any number of vigorous outdoor activities - tramping
(hiking), skiing, rafting and, of course, that perennial favourite, bungy
jumping - await the adventurous. You can swim with dolphins, gambol with
newborn lambs, whalewatch or fish for fattened trout in the many streams.
The people, bound in a culture that melds European with Maori ancestry,
are resourceful, helpful and overwhelmingly friendly. The extraordinary
place names - try Te Awamutu, Whangamomona or Paekakariki for tongue-trippers
- are resonant and, with a modicum of practice, easy to pronounce.
Because it's such a compact
place, travel within New Zealand - whether by plane, bus, rail, car or
bicycle - is affordable and efficient. Accommodation too is cheap and varied.
And the culinary promise of venison, fresh seafood, sublime ice cream and
award-winning wines should more than whet the appetite.

| The Kiwi Bird

The Kiwi, of the order Apterygiformes-Ratitae,
occurs only in New Zealand. Although primarily a bird of New Zealand’s
native forests, kiwis also live in scrub and native grasslands. Because
the kiwi is a semi-nocturnal, secretive bird, few New Zealanders have seen
their national bird in the wild.
The kiwi is the sole survivor
of an ancient order of birds including the now extinct moas. A flightless
bird about the size of a domestic fowl, the kiwi has coarse, bristly, hair-like
feathers.

| Multiplaz Plasmotron

The MULTIPLAZ-2500 is a multi-functional,
portable, handheld water-plasma device that was a result of an invention
by Russian scientists.
MULTIPLAZ-2500 is the only
Russian invention that was awarded the Grand Prix Prize in all of the years
of the Geneva World Invention Salon history.
For the first time in the
history of the metal working Industry, with the help of technology, a new
device has been developed for the heat treatment of
0.5 - 8-10mm thickness metal
(cutting, welding, soldering, tempering, spraying, etc.). Generating plasma
via a water steaming process can now be conducted in absolute safety, using
a portable, hand held, powerful, multi-functional and ecologically sound
method.
The plasmatron is comprised
of a plasma torch and an electronic power module with the total weight
of only 6 kg. It can be carried to the work site in a small bag. No compressors,
transformers, gas-cylinders or other heavy equipment is required to operate
the device.
The plasmatron works like
this:
An electric arc is ignited
inside the torch arm, between the anode gate and cathode gate, converting
the contained water first into the vaporized and then into the plasma state.
In the vaporized state, the steam is ionized and under naturally generated
pressure, it emerges from the torch nozzle as a 8000°C plasma jet.
This can be used for cutting, welding, soldering of any metal up to 10
mm thick such as stainless high-alloy steel, aluminum, titanium, brick,
concrete and ceramic.

| Maori People

The Polynesian Maoris reached
New Zealand in about 800 AD. It now seems evident that they came from the
island of Taiwan. The British proclaimed their sovereignty over the islands
in 1840 and began settlement that same year. A series of land wars between
1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British
colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported
the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation
in number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years the
government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

Modern Life - "A long
Walk"
BY Mike Litrel M.D.
Ann once asked me what was wrong with the hinges on the kitchen cabinets.
After a few moments of manly inspection, I reassured her they were fine.
Then why, she asked in an innocent voice, do they never close after you
use the cabinets?
So the other day when she asked me if the lenses on my glasses were scratched,
I feigned deafness and hid behind my newspaper. It was the perfect way
to recover from a long night's work at the hospital. I just wasn't in the
mood for a discussion about my personal flaws, no matter how fascinating
the conversation sounded. Surprisingly, the subject came up anyway. Apparently,
I do not put my dirty clothing inside the laundry basket. Ann was curious
if I believed my clothing magically made its way from the floor into the
laundry basket. Or did I grasp that another human being was somehow involved
in the process?
