| Keeping
Busy
Dzien' dobry dear readers,
welcome to our October edition!
A project such as building
a house or a new dental practice is a major event in anyone's life. The
tasks are presented relentlessly, several at a time. This avalanche
of work can last for several months. All manner of normal daily chores
have to be postponed or even forgotten while "the project" demands every
last ounce of your concentration. Something like being an Internet
entrepreneur!
My garden is so overgrown
that neighbors wonder if I still live at this address. They used to wonder
that anyway, while I was 24/7 on the internet. The web still beckons
for my attention every day so I make the effort to get up early and attend
to my email. I find myself pecking away at the keyboard hours later, oblivious
to the time. Honestly, I've never found another pastime that makes the
clock go faster!
In any case, "keeping busy"
seems to be an acceptable and satisfying state to be in, as long as you
have something to show for it at the end of the day. I guess the feeling
of satisfaction that you get from achieving something makes it all worthwhile.
On the other hand, I'm really
going to appreciate a holiday, if I ever get the time!
Our country of the month
is Poland.
do zobaczenia until next
month.

Internet
Burn Out Syndrome!
by
Neil Shearing
The Internet is always there,
24 hours a day, every
day of the year...
There are millions of people
"out there"...
They are looking for your
product, but can't find it
because you haven't finished
promoting your web site,
or...
They are in competition
with you and are frantically
building their web sites
and promoting them like crazy,
trying to steal your visitors
and customers!
You should be promoting,
building, learning, selling!
There are people to sell
to!
There are competitors to
stay ahead of!
I Must Work 24 Hours A Day!
STOP!
If you are thinking any of
the above thoughts you need to take a deep breath. You are in the late
stages of a new disease..."Internet Burn Out Syndrome"!
You can be cured, just read
the rest of this article.
Unfortunately, all the above
paranoid statements are true.
There are millions of people
on the Internet, they are
potential customers and
also potential competitors.
But you need to recognize
that you cannot function
properly if you view the
Internet from a paranoid perspective.
You need to realize that
you cannot put 24 hours a
day into your online business.
Unless you love it, you will probably struggle to put in 8 hours a day.
If you work another job
full or part time, you will be able to spend even less time on the Internet.
So here's a list of ways
to make the most of the time you do spend online. If you follow these steps
you will have an edge on your competitors!
Properly Prioritize.
Know what has to be done
and by when.
Trash the jobs that are
unimportant, and plan to do the important ones in a set order and by a
set time. Use a reasonable time frame, not an ambitious one.
Single Steps
Do your tasks individually.
Yes, you could "multitask", but have you seen the mess in a kitchen when
a chef is cooking several meals at once? When your online credibility is
at stake don't try juggling six balls.
Stop for Seconds
Take little "mini breaks"
of ten to fifteen seconds every couple of minutes, just look at something
else! Give your eyeballs a break, they need it!
Intimidation Intervals
Recognize those times when
you start to become overawed by the Internet. If you start thinking that
there's "too much to do" or "not enough time" get up and walk away, for
a long time. I suggest hours, or even taking the rest of the day off. This
has to be fun, not torture!
Surfin' Sunshine
Remember the thrill of getting
online the first time? Remember seeing if Yahoo was really there? Once
in a while, take time to go surfing the Web and find new sites. Rekindle
your love of the Internet. The work you have to do will seem a lot more
fun!
Web-ache? Go Walking.
Get up, go out. Do something
other than the Internet. Enjoy the Autumnal weather, kick some leaves,
watch a sunset ot two. You will return refreshed and invigorated.

| Five-Minute Parent
If you're the parent of a
young child, you probably have learned how to cram a lot of work into five
minutes, which is usually your child's attention span. This bi-monthly
newsletter takes more than five minutes to read -- you'll have to wait
for nap time, in other words -- but you'll find plenty of five-minute ideas
for playing and nurturing your busy little ones.
"I want parents to understand
that five minutes spent with your child is by no means enough, but great
things can happen in just 5 minutes!" says publisher Deborah Shelton. To
that end, she gives you a list of fast, fun (often free) activities for
you to share with all ages of children, along with longer, more thought
- provoking articles, often by guest writers, about the joys and challenges
of parenthood. Although it's often written by and for a mom's point of
view, dads will find plenty of ways to get more involved in their
kids' lives, too.

Flag

The Polish flag dates back
to the mediaeval pennants. At first it was all red with a white eagle.
Such a flag, or rather a banner, was at the side of King Wladyslaw Jagiello
during the Battle of Grunwald in 1410. The red and white colors appeared
together as late as the 17th century.

Cuisine |
Bread
has always had enormous symbolic importance to Poles. Buckwheat is also
often seen in the Polish cuisine today. It is Poland's most popular side
dish. Pickled vegetables such as cucumbers, beetroot, cabbage (sauerkraut)
and kohlrabi have become an essential part of Polish cooking. The idea
of pickling is not limited to vegetables; herring, fished in the Baltic,
is soused with spices and vinegar and used among other things, for fasting
days and holy days. This has remained as Poland's favorite national food.
With the accent on storage, sour cream, curd cheese and soured milk have
become important constituents of the Polish kitchen. Fresh cream and milk
would be left to ferment. These dairy products have become an essential
element in the taste and flavor of Polish cooking. Meat plays a significant
importance in the Polish diet. Perhaps the most famous Polish meat known
is the kielbasa, the Polish sausage. Polish food has much to offer, and
I for one enjoy its robustness. As the Polish would say, "Jedzcie, pijcie
i popuszczajcie pasa"... "Eat, drink and loosen your belt".

Short Stories |
Do You Plot With Your
Character In Mind?
by Georgina Stath
You are plotting the story.
You write down what will happen, what problems will arise, what obstacles
you will place so the character won't reach his goals immediately, what
he's going to do to overcome
these problems etc...
So all these things will
be happening to your character since it's his story we are telling.
Does it make sense then to
have your character in mind as you plot these things?
It does. Because it will
depend, based on the type of person he is, how he will face these problems,
what he will feel, what he will think, what he will do.
Different types of personalities
make up our world. Some people worry too much, so whatever problems come
along, they will worry with the same intensity.
Other people view the lighter
side of life. Minor problems do not affect them as largely as major problems.
To some challengers are welcome - they thrive on them. To others, challengers
are viewed with fear and uncertainty.
As you're plotting the events
of your story they have to correspond with the type of personality your
character possesses.
What happens when you plot
without thinking of your character?
He will act 'out of character.'
He will do, say, think, feel things that don't suit his personality.
For instance...
If your character is a worrier
and you place him in a situation where he doesn't worry, then that's making
him act according to how you want him to act in your plot.
You're manipulating him to
suit your plot - You're not writing with his personality in mind.
As you plot the events in
the story, simultaneously build your character.
Cross-reference what you
have written about your character and the situation he is in.
Do they correspond?
Georgina Stath is the author
of The Editor In Your Ear, a detailed resource for the short story
writer to check their stories themselves, eliminating the need to keep
paying expensive editing services.
The book shows you step by
step how to find the errors in our story and how to fix them. Your stories
will be transformed into professional works that you can sell confidently.
A must have resource for
every short story writer.
