Religion, politics, passion, history, social injustice and a standing army are not the ideal ingredients for a 'get away from it all' holiday. But these are the things that draw thousands of visitors & thousands of emigrants to Israel every year. This is 'where it happened,' a land that grips at the imagination of every Christian, Jew and Muslim in the world, and inflames a fair few of them to hatred and violence as well. It's the intangibles of Israel - standing in the footsteps of gods, breathing the air of the Messiah - that bring people here, and it's the very intangibility of them that leaves so many visitors disappointed. Anyone expecting profound moments of epiphany brought on by immersion in the refined air of the holy land is in for a shock. Israel is a bustling, smelly, noisy, modern country, just as capable of squeezing a tacky tourist buck out of the sacred as any US bible-belt town.

If you come to Israel without preconceptions, you are far more likely to leave with happy memories. Sure, Israel's history and religious links are vital parts of its appeal, but they are not the be-all and end-all; Israel is more than a powder-keg or a promised land. Take time to visit the new, cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv, dive the Red Sea at Eilat, explore some of the country's thriving national parks and float for hours in the salty stillness of the Dead Sea. If you want to understand Israel, take the time to look beyond the larger-than-life figures of the past and have a chat to your bus driver or hostel owner.

Whatever you call this part of the world, you're bound to offend someone. We decided to go with Israel & the Palestinian Territories, By that, we mean the area which includes the state of Israel as well as the disputed areas of the West Bank, Golan Heights and Gaza Strip.

Rest, recovery, and the body's natural variable rythms are more important to fitness conditioning than previously considered; so concluded a joint study at Harvard and Columbia Universities that was announced during the Exercise Physiology Conference in Finland, in June of 2001. 

The Cyclic Exercise Protocol Study seems to 
suggest that training in short bouts of intense 
activity (60 seconds or less to target heart rate), 
combined with complete rest (back to resting heart rate), works both the active and passive phases of exercise, and achieves many of the cardiovascular health benefits once associated, exclusively, with much longer, and more vigorous workouts. This is great news for busy firefighters, and anybody who wants to stay fit and healthy, but at the same time is bogged down by the day to day chores of living. 

Our need for cardiovascular fitness is very clear, 
not only as a means to burn fat, but to protect
against the ravages of heart disease. As a firefighter, I've become keenly aware of how important heart 
health can be to a long and healthy life. Specifically, the need for a high level of heart rate variability (as described below) that can be tested on a daily basis fighting fires. When the alarm rings, firefighters go from zero to sixty at a moments notice, and so do their heart rates. 

The more flexibility your heart rate exhibits between beats, known as heart rate variability (HRV), the healthier you are. HRV is the measure of change in the heart's beat-to-beat rate. 
The more monotonous, or constant the heart rate, 
the lower the HRV. The well-known 1994 Framingham Heart Study, has previously identified HRV as the only common factor associated with all healthy individuals. Maintaining a certain degree of HRV is obviously vital to overall health. 

Study Details
 Location: Harvard University, Columbia University
 Title: Implementation of a Novel Cyclic Exercise Protocol
 Participants: 11 women ages 32 to 58
 Exercise: Short bursts of intense effort followed by 
 complete recovery
 Schedule: Cycles (1 active, 1 recovery) of 4 to 7 sets,  3 times per week for 8 weeks 

Findings
Short burst (60 seconds or less) off intense 
aerobic activity, followed by complete recovery 
has a positive impact on health. This is the first evidence that an exercise program designed 
to train activity and recovery phases of exercise 
may improve health and fitness. 

So how should you handle this new information? 
By no means abandoned your long standing exercise program. But it's nice to know that when life gets away from us, and there are days, or yes... even weeks, when we can't get in 30 minutes a day 
of the proper exercise, a few intense sets done with 
the right amount of rest can make a big difference 
in our overall health and appearance.

Heart Rate Variability 
Mood 
Immune System Function 
Blood Pressure

In the movie released last year, "The Castaway," 
Tom Hanks played the role of a FedEx delivery man. His job was to fly all over the world making sure that the packages were delivered on time. 

One fateful trip found his cargo plane flying through a nasty storm somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. The plane crashed near a tiny, deserted island. The only survivor was Hanks. 

Upon awakening the next day, Hanks found himself 
all alone. Alone with nothing except the clothes 
on his back. 

So picture this: no matches, no tools, no food, 
no shelter, no communications, only 1 small 
flashlight along with a few packages containing some useless items that had washed up on shore. 

He learned to survive a meager existence sleeping 
in a small dark cave. His food came from coconuts 
and the few fish he managed to catch. 

Tom Hanks was captured and held prisoner on an 
island with seemingly no hope of ever escaping. 
Every day the island dictated to him how he was 
to live. 

He was trapped on that island because he saw no 
way of escape. 

His fears of losing what small sense of security 
the island provided, as despicable as it was, 
prevented him from trying to escape to a better 
life. A life he knew existed, but now only dreamed about. 

Looking out over the vast expanse of the ocean, 
he constantly thought about that better life. But 
those thoughts soon returned to seeing the opposition and competition that prevented him from 
returning to what was rightfully his. 

4 long years later, Tom Hanks made a decision. 
He had grown sick and tired of having a nothing life. 

It was either die a nobody,  going no place, on 
a nowhere island, continuing to live a struggling 
and pitiful hand to mouth existence, or......die trying to escape to a real life. 

The Pacific Ocean was the obstacle. His opponent 
was his own fears of overcoming that obstacle. 

He made a plan to escape. The day arrived and 
Hanks set sail aboard a make shift, rinky dink raft of logs tied together with tree bark and video tape. 

He met every adversity the South Pacific could throw at him. It wasn't easy, but finally, the rescue came. 

The movie portrayed a very intense drama. An 
analogy of what life is like for many people. 
Thousands of folks every day feel trapped in a no- where life. They feel like their life is being wasted, like they are going nowhere, on a nowhere island with little hope of escape. 

Every day these people trudge off to a boring and hopeless job that offers only an existence but no real sense of satisfaction in life as accomplishing anything. 

These people know there is a better life out there, a life they so desire, yet it seems so far away. They are trapped on their own island of despair. 

Held there, not by the island itself, but by their own fears of not being able to overcome the adversity and opposition that lies between them and their dreams. 

A few do escape from that island. They are the ones who finally become sick and tired of living a wasted life, they are the ones who overcome the fear inside. 

They start out from their island, not really knowing if they will make it or not. But they look that sea of difficulties square in the eye and say, in the unforgettable words of Admiral David Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."
